Una bellissima passeggiata/A lovely walk

Ieri come spesso faccio, sono andata con i cani sul molo di levante e, poiché è uno dei miei posti preferiti, lo condivido spesso con i miei ospiti. Ecco che ho pensato di "inserirlo" in una delle mete turistiche diverse.
Entrate nel Porto di Catania e dirigetevi sulla sinistra verso il molo di levante. Salite sul molo e camminate fino alla punta (circa 2km). Il panorama è splendido, è come essere su una passerella in mezzo al mare, guardando verso Catania si vede l'Etna che domina la città, a destra i faraglioni di Acitrezza, a sinistra la plaja e il golfo di Catania. Vi assicuro è una bellissima passeggiata con qualunque condizione meteorologica anche quando piove. E' un modo diverso di vedere la nostra città dove dominano le cupole delle molte chiese e si respira quest'aria di mare e di libertà.

The dock of the port, one of my favorite walk in Catania, (2Km ) If you like strolling do not miss this lovely walk on the dock of Catania. If you look at the city you will have a beautiful view of mt. Etna, at your right the Cyclopes (Acitrezza) the legendary rocks in the middle of the sea, and at your left the beach Plaja and the golf of Catania. It is like being on a catwalk in the middle of the sea and no matter how the weather conditions are, it i always beautiful.

ETNA un'isola nell'isola - an island in the island

Chiunque venga a Catania vuole andare sull'Etna. E' un must, una meta che non può non essere negli itinerari turistici e non solo. Parlare dell'Etna sarebbe impossibile in un blog quindi mi limito a dare delle informazioni utili su come fare ad organizzare un'escursione libera o personalizzata. Prima di tutto controllate il meteo, è vero che le condizioni su una montagna così alta (3350 mt) possono cambiare velocemente ma è anche vero che se il tempo è brutto con pioggia e vento forse è meglio rimandare a meno che non se ne possa proprio fare a meno. Avete varie possibilità di escursioni, ci sono quelle organizzate da una miriade di associazioni che con fuori strada e scenografie varie vi portano al rifugio Sapienza (zona sud) per un prezzo di circa 40€ a persona e vi fanno vedere quello che normalmente tutti i turisti fanno. Certo può essere un'esperienza nuova per chi non è mai stato su un vulcano ma io vi consiglio, se potete, di chiedere alla struttura dove vi trovate, un servizio "privato". Ci sono infatti dei giovani, qualificatissimi, che portano i turisti personalizzando l'escursione in base alle loro capacità fisiche. Consiglio quindi di chiedere prima di decidere (se volete potete contattarmi e vi do alcune dritte) . Certo questo vi costa un po' di più ma ne vale la pena.
L'Etna è un mondo e c'è moltissimo da fare e da vedere, varrebbe la pena passare una settimana esplorando i suoi versanti, i paesi etnei, degustando le specialità, i vini passeggiando o andando in bici., a cavallo ...infinite le possibilità.
Se siete con la vostra macchina andate a Linguaglossa, salite da Piano Provenzana e poi comprate il biglietto per salire con le jeep fin quasi al bordo del cratere centrale. E' spettacolare.
Se invece siete a piedi e non volete spendere molti soldi e siete dei camminatori, alla stazione centrale di Catania parte un bus della Etna Trasporti alle 08,15 per il piazzale sud (Rifugio Sapienza) una volta arrivati (verso le 10) prendete la funivia (€ 30 a persona, andata e ritorno) e dall'arrivo della funivia proseguite a piedi fin dove ce la fate ma senza avventurarvi dove capita...TENETE SEMPRE PRESENTE CHE SIETE SU UN VULCANO ATTIVO.....andate all'affaccio della Valle del Bove se il tempo è bello, la vista è mozzafiato. Il bus riparte dal piazzale verso le 16 (informatevi prima di scendere) . Se avete domande o curiosità contattatemi, è difficilissimo dare tutte le informazioni dal blog.

When you come to Catania for sure you won't miss Mount Etna. It is a must in the journey. It is impossible to talk about this mountain in a blog and so I will give you here just some useful information about how to organize your excursion to Mt Etna. First of all check the weather conditions and if possible do not go with wind or rain unless you have no other choice. It is true that being a very high mountain the weather may change quickly but it would be better to choose a sunny day. There are many possibilities for the excursions, ask where you are staying for a typical tour which costs about 40€ or, if you prefer (and this would be much better) ask for a private tour that will be scheduled according with your wishes . If you want you can contact me and I will give you more suggestions or contact with expert and qualified people who can take you showing the best of this territory. Of course this will be more expensive but it is worth doing it. There is so much to do and to see and it is almost impossible if you are on your own . It is a territory full of beautiful landscapes, food, wine ...endless possibilities

If you are with your own car go to Linguaglossa and Piano Provenzana, than buy the ticket for the jeep to go to the edge of the main crater ...it is fabulous.

If you have no car and do not want to spend too much money, the cheapest way is the take the bus from the railway station square in Catania (Etna Trsporti) that leaves every day at 08,15 a.m. and once at the Rifugio Sapienza you can take the cable car (30€ both way) and at the arrival take a walk and go to the edge of the Valle del Bove or up to the craters according with your physical shape.  Do not go just anywhere and remember that YOU ARE ON AN ACTIVE VOLCANO  and not a simple mountain so follow the advises and respect the interdictions. The bus normally leaves at 4 p.m. but always ask the driver.

Catania, come avrete letto un po ovunque, è stata completamente rasa al suolo da un sisma nel 1693 (11 gennaio alle ore 11). Solo 5 edifici hanno resistito al sisma e capite bene dunque che la città, completamente ricostruita, è un bell'esempio di barocco. Basta guardare le facciate dei palazzi e delle chiese per rendersene conto. Una delle più belle chiese di Catania è senza dubbio la Badia di Sant'Agata (vicino al Duomo) dove potete anche fare una visita guidata fin sulla cupola. Non perdetevi in questa visita settecentesca il Palazzo Biscari (alle 12 circa è possibile visitarlo con offerta libera) e il parlatorio delle Benedettine con annessa chiesa (in via Crociferi, a pagamento con ottime audioguide). Se avete ancora tempo e voglia una bellissima visita è quella al monastero dei Benedettini, un po più in su, all'ingresso trovate la biglietteria con tutte le informazioni sulle visite guidate e date un'occhiata all'attigua chiesa di San Nicola (la più grande di Sicilia, dicono seconda solo a San Pietro) potrete anche vedere una meridiana estremamente dettagliata con informazioni interessantissime e spiegate nei pannelli e un sacrario con i nomi dei soldati caduti nella grande guerra e nella seconda guerra mondiale.

Volete concludere con qualcosa da mangiare? Un arancino se ancora non lo avete mangiato ma anche un buon pranzo a base di pesce alla pescheria, vi assicuro che ne vale la pena.

As you probably already know Catania was totally destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 (11th of January at 11 a.m.) Just 5 buildings remained of the old city and the rest was rebuilt in 1700 this is why you can admire this magnificent baroque style in Catania. One of the most beautiful example of 1700 is the church Badia di Sant'Agata (near the Duomo) where you can have a guided visit up to the top of the dome. Don't miss the visit of Palazzo Biscari a beautiful private palace that you can see at 12 (a.m.) every day (according with the owner engagements) free entrance but if you give something at the end of the visit it will be appreciated. Another monument to see is the parlor of the Benedictine nuns and the church (a ticket to pay and excellent audioguide). If you are not too tired continue to the Benedictine Monastery and follow the guided tour (ticket at the entrance) . Today it belongs to the University of Catania. Give also a look to the church of San Nicola (the largest of Sicily and it seems second just to St Peter in Rome) where you also find a very interesting sun dial with lots of information and the pantheon of the soldiers who lost their lives in both the world wars.

Would you like now something to eat: have you already tasted the arancino, that might be an idea but if you want a proper meal I suggest you   to go to the fish market and one of my favorite place

Il primo impatto con la Sicilia Orientale /The first impact with eastern Sicily

Benvenuti, cerco di mettermi nei panni di chi arriva da noi senza esserci mai stato e avrebbe bisogno di sapere come muoversi. Ve lo dico subito, qui da noi tutto è stupendo ma niente è facile né scontato.
Non aspettatevi che sia come "altrove"....qui siamo in Sicilia e nel bene e nel male è unica al mondo. Si dice che questa terra sia stata benedetta dagli Dei e maledetta dagli uomini, se la vedrete nel modo giusto vi accorgerete che è la pura verità.
Vorrei però che una cosa fosse chiara, e questo vale in genere per chiunque viaggi. Non fate paragoni, è inutile mettersi nell'atteggiamento di chi viene per insegnare, chi viaggia viaggia per imparare e chiunque, anche l'essere in apparenza più inutile, ha qualcosa da insegnare. Mettetevi dunque nello stato d'animo di chi viene per scoprire un mondo diverso, antichissimo, pieno di meraviglie e di brutture e poi, quando ve ne andrete, deciderete se vi è entrato nell'anima oppure no, ma soprattutto sforzatevi ad entrare nell'animo della gente, gente buona, gente pessima, gente unica in ogni caso.

Ebbene state uscendo dalla zona arrivi dell'aeroporto di Catania e vi accorgerete subito che non sapete in che direzione andare (infatti le indicazioni scarseggiano)......

Andate verso sinistra e uscendo troverete posteggiato l'ALIBUS che di solito parte ogni 20 minuti.

Il biglietto dell'ALIBUS si fa a bordo e costa 4 €. Vi consiglio di vedere dove si trova il vostro hotel per decidere quale fermata vi conviene. Chiedete pure al conducente di solito sono molto gentili.

All'uscita centrale ci sono invece i taxi . Piccolo suggerimento: il taxi prendetelo solo se indispensabile, sono carissimi, anche se si considera che l'aeroporto è a soli 5 km dal centro di Catania. Ci sarebbe una tariffa concordata ma non la rispettano mai adducendo mille scuse, quindi se potete lasciate perdere i taxi. I catanesi non li usano quasi mai, non ci piace farci turlupinare.

A questo punto dovreste arrivare in hotel o b&b (ormai ce ne sono una marea) quindi sistematevi e a dopo.

Se per caso avete noleggiato una macchina NON LASCIATE NULLA dentro la macchine, neanche se non si vede e chiedete dove alloggiate se c'è un posto sicuro dove parcheggiare. La notte in certe zone di Catania è un vero problema , non sottovalutatelo, i turisti poi sono subito presi di mira.

Welcome, I try to imagine me being a traveller arriving here for the first time not knowing how to behave. Here everything is beautiful, but nothing is easy and clear. Do not expect being as everywhere else, here we are in Sicily in the good and in the bad unique in the world. People say that this is a land blessed by gods and coursed by men and if you look at it in the right way you will realize how true this is. I would like to point out that it is useless to make comparisons while you are here. Do not feel as you are here to teach us something, travelers travel to learn and even the most insignificant person has something to teach. Try than to be in the mood of wanting to discover a different world , ancient, full of history beauty as well as  ugly things and after, when you leave, you will decide if this has left something in your soul or not but make an effort to get in touch with the people, good people, ugly people, unique people anyway.

Well you are exiting from the arrival area and soon notice that there are no many indications (especially in english).

Go left and once out you will see the ALIBUS it normally leaves every 20 minutes.

The ALIBUS goes to the city centre and you can buy the ticket on board 4€. Check the location of your hotel to know which is your stop. Ask the driver, they are usually very kind and some time also speak some english. Write the address and try to make you understand with the hands...(typically sicilian) if not give him a pen and make the sign to write the name of the stop.

I suggest you not to take a taxi unless it is really necessary. They are quite expensive and not fair, we never take taxis in Catania. The airport is just 5 km away from the city centre so you will be down town in 10 minutes.

You should be at your hotel or b&b by now so have a nice rest.....

Be careful if you rent a car NEVER LEAVE ANYTHING inside even if it cannot be seen from outside...it is dangerous and always ask at your hotel or b&b a safe place for the car. There are areas in Catania where it is better to pay attention and being tourists you do not know where it is safe or not. Do not trust what people in the street suggest you they might fool you.
